Uses and Risks of Vardenafil, or Levitra
Vardenafil, also known as Levitra, is a prescription drug that treats male erectile dysfunction.
Erectile dysfunction occurs when a man is unable to obtain or maintain an erection. This is usually because the arteries that carry blood to the penis are very narrow.
Varadnafil increases blood flow to the penis.
Its action is similar to sildenafil or Viagra, but Viagra lasts between 2 and 4 hours, while Levitra lasts for 4 hours.
How does it work?
During a penis erection, the penis fills with blood.
Blood vessels that supply the penis with blood expansion, or dilation, and vessels that carry the blood away from the penis contract. Two large chambers in the penis, known as corpus cavernosa, fill with blood.
An erection results as soon as blood accumulates in the penis.
Vardenafil phosphodiesterase type-5 (PDE5) belongs to a class of drugs called inhibitors. A PDE5 inhibitor closes PDE5 by narrowing the arteries.
By relaxing the arteries, vardenafil increases blood flow when a man is sexually aroused.
The active component works on a series of responses within the penis during stimulation.
When a male is sexually aroused, nitric oxide is released into his penis, and it triggers a series of reactions.
It causes an enzyme, guanylate cyclase, which produces cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP).
CGMP regulates the contraction and dilation, or expansion, of blood vessels that carry blood from the penis. The chemical reaction causes vessels that supply the penis to dilate, while those removing the blood from the penis contract.
Phosphodires-5 (PDE5), another enzyme breaks down or destroys cGMP.
When cGMP is destroyed, blood vessels return to their normal size, effectively ending erection. PDE5 closes by destroying vardenafil cGMP. In this way, it allows cGMP to work longer. As a result, it helps to prolong an erection.
Dosage and usage
Vardenafil is available in 2.5 mg (mg), 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg tablets. The first dose is normally 10 mg.
The 10 mg dose of vardenafil is equivalent to about 50 mg of sildenafil or Viagra. The reason for this is that the chemical composition of vardenafil is different from sildenafil.
Varadnafil is taken 25 to 60 minutes before sex. Its effect lasts for 5 hours. A maximum of one tablet can be used every 24 hours.
Orodipersable tablets should be left to dissolve on the tongue before swallowing. They should not be taken with any type of drink.
The drug will not work unless the man is sexually aroused, so foreplay will normally be necessary.
Vardenafil can be taken with or without food, but drinking alcohol is not recommended, as it reduces the likelihood of an erection. Alcohol may also increase the risk of adverse effects.
